New Kitchen Design Costs
Whether it is a remodel or a new build, the option to design a new kitchen is an exciting one and can allow you to improve your space and improve the value of your home. After all, kitchen and bath improvements have some of the highest ROIs, and a newly built home with your dream kitchen will make your life easier and far more enjoyable. Yet, there is one key element to ensure success and it is a skilled designer.
The costs to design a new kitchen are going to vary based on a few factors, and they include the rate that a designer requires for their work, the amount of time you put into the process, and whether it is a remodel or a new build.

Other considerations and costs
- Other factors that might drive the prices up include the amount of time or level of involvement that the designer provides. If they spend a great deal of time on drafting, editing and improving the plans as well as consulting with you, expect the costs to increase.
- If the design includes structural plans, which means that it is not just a grid with the layout but plumbing and wiring schematics, and other details, the cost to design a new kitchen is going to increase, too.
- The designer that issues printed plans, instead of online files in a 2D or 3D format, is likely to also charge a great deal more.
- Keep in mind that anyone who plans ahead and does a lot of the initial design legwork can really cut costs. For example, why not have photos of kitchens that inspire you? Why not have model numbers and styles of appliances, fixtures, and other items ready? Have a list of questions you intend to ask the designer before you sit down for a meeting.
- It is always best to work with a designer or team that is affiliated and/or certified by the National Kitchen and Bath Association.
DIY considerations
- The design of a new kitchen can be done on a DIY basis, but it won’t help you avoid any glitches in the structural issues of the kitchen, nor will it ensure that you get optimal flow and results. That is something that only an expert can provide, and as a kitchen is one of the most expensive upgrades in a home, it pays to work with one of these professionals.
