When you are getting a new mattress, you have to remember that you need to do something with the old mattress that you no longer need. If the mattress is still in good shape, you might be able to use it in a bedroom in the guestroom, or you might have a friend or family member who could use a mattress. Donation is another option. The charity will often pick up the mattress from your home, but you will likely need to have it out of the bedroom and ready to go.

DIY considerations

• You can remove the old mattress on your own, but you will likely want to have some help from at least one other person. Mattresses can be heavy and unwieldy.
• If you are removing the mattress yourself, you will need to have the means to move the mattress to a recycling center or landfill. This means owning, borrowing, or renting a truck that will be able to safely transport the mattress.
