Gutters are designed to provide drainage for the home, so they need to be kept clear. Gutters typically need cleaned one to three times per year, depending on climate and tree cover.

Most gutter cleaning estimates are provided at a per-linear-foot cost, although some companies will charge by the hour or by the project. If you have a lot of trees over your home, this could impact your cleaning costs.

• Gutter cleaners will charge a premium fee for two- and three-story homes with gutters that require access via a ladder or scaffolding. If your home has gutters that are more than 10-15 feet off the ground, expect to pay more for the increased risk of the cleaners.
• Unstable terrain may also impact the cost of your cleaning. Again, it’s about safety for the cleaner that comes to your home, and if they feel the job has more risk, they may charge more in labor.
• Expect to pay about 50% more for cleaning if you have a steep roof or gutters that aren’t easy to access. These features take more time and can complicate the process, which is why they cost more.

DIY considerations

• If you are comfortable on a ladder, you can save a lot on gutter cleaning by doing it yourself. All you really need are some gloves and a bucket, although a small trowel wouldn’t hurt to help with removal.
• Never flush debris down the drain gutters. This can quickly become clogged and create a backflow since the water moving through gutters typically goes too slowly to penetrate a clog.
