How Much Does It Cost To Build A Barn?
$47,500
Build Barn Costs
A lot of people assume that barns are simple, but today’s models can vary significantly in size, uses, features, and cost. The intended use of the barn is perhaps one of the biggest factors because the space will need to be built and outfitted accordingly. The cost of this project involves the materials required to construct the barn, the labor involved in construction, a concrete foundation and floor, any electrical or plumbing work required, and other situational factors.
High-end and premium features like bulk feed tanks or motor scales will substantially impact the cost of barn construction. Barns can be built in almost any size and type, providing project solutions for every budget.
Barn building: by barn type, 1,000 sq.ft., materials and labor included in the cost per sq.ft.
Item | Unit Cost | Quantity | Cost |
---|---|---|---|
Traditional wood barn: classic look, more expensive but traditional. | $45-$65 per sq.ft. | 1,000 | $45,000-$65,000 |
Antique wood barn: most expensive, materials hard to source, custom structural engineering requirements. | $65-$75 per sq.ft. | 1,000 | $65,000-$75,000 |
Pole barn: affordable, often sold in kits or as a finished product with assembly and installation required. | $20-$30 per sq.ft. | 1,000 | $20,000-$30,000 |
Metal barn: steel supports and beams, more affordable than wood, concrete slab required. | $25-$35 per sq.ft. | 1,000 | $25,000-$35,000 |
Other considerations and costs
- Especially in the Midwest, there is a growing trend toward Amish-built barns and garages. With advertised prices starting around $5,000, this can seem too good to be true. You do have to be careful that you’re actually getting the quality of craftsmanship that you deserve and that they aren’t just capitalizing on a trend and selling regular buildings as Amish-built to make a bigger profit. Most companies are legitimate, but there are always a few to watch out for.
- These cost estimates do not include taxes and permit fees. Constructing a new building requires at least one building permit, and your city or town may require more. Check with your contractor regarding permit requirements and costs.
- Site prep and demolition charges can vary significantly. Some people only need slight land grading, while others will need a full demo, haul away, and grading before a new barn can be built.

DIY considerations
- Building a barn is a big project. Only those with advanced construction knowledge and carpentry skills should attempt this job, and then only with the assistance of some friends or hired labor.
- Before you allow the contractor to provide materials, research what it would cost to provide your own or purchase a barn kit. This may be a more affordable option.
